Leonard Cohen reschedules European dates
Leonard Cohen has rescheduled a run of European dates due to a back injury. Cohen recently suffered a compression injury in his lower back while exercising and has been advised by his doctor to allow time to heal, according to a press release.

Cohen's physicians advised the artist to follow the typical regimen of four to six months physical therapy prescribed for athletes with similar injuries. "Doctors have confirmed that Mr. Cohen is otherwise in terrific shape, thanks to years of exercise and careful diet, and simply needs appropriate time to recover from the lower back injury," Cohen's manager said in a statement.

The 13 postponed dates include shows in France, Poland, Slovakia and Russia.

'Hope for Haiti Now' distributes $35 million
"Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" will distribute to six beneficiaries the first installment of funds raised by the Jan. 22 telethon.
An advisory committee received proposals last week and, after an intensive review process, allocated $35 million, which is slightly more than half of the $66 million in pledged donations, according to a press release.

As part of the grant allocations, "HFHN" is providing specific descriptions of how each organization will use funds for relief efforts and immediate rebuilding initiatives.

Oxfam America will receive $8 million to build systems for clean water and safe sanitation, deliver shelter and relief supplies, and work on lasting solutions for food security, housing and land issues.

Partners in Health will receive $8 million to provide emergency medical assistance and supplies, strengthen the public health system, and provide rehabilitation, social support and economic assistance to survivors.

American Red Cross will receive $6 million to supply emergency shelter and non-food relief items to vulnerable families, specifically targeting female-headed households, the disabled, elderly, and the disadvantaged.

UNICEF will receive $6 million to coordinate the immediate protection of children, prevent and respond to family separations, support the psychosocial needs of families and children, and prevent child exploitation for trafficking.

United Nations World Food Programme will receive $6 million to ensure the distribution of meals and other life-saving food assistance to the most vulnerable earthquake victims in urban and rural areas over the next six months.

Yele Haiti Foundation will receive $1 million to promote community mobilization in major under-served neighborhoods to coordinate aid delivery and support recovery efforts.

One beneficiary, the newly formed Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, will request funds to go to recovery and rebuilding efforts in the next round of disbursements.

All partner organizations will report regularly to "HFHN" on how the funds are being used on the ground in Haiti. Through field reports and real-time updates, the impact of immediate assistance will be closely monitored and assessed each month before additional funds are distributed.

Jamaica's annual Bob Marley celebration canceled
Smile Jamaica, the annual concert celebration of Bob Marley's birthday, is being canceled this year due to what organizers are calling numerous circumstances, according to the Jamaica Observer.
A spokesperson for Smile Jamaica told the Observer that the organization hopes to celebrate Marley's life next year, but for 2010, "there are some extenuating circumstances that just cannot be ignored and there's no way we could proceed with the concert bearing them in mind." The extenuating circumstances were not specified.

Event organizers, Ghetto Youth International, said efforts will be stepped up to make a 2011 staging possible.

Marley's family reportedly will celebrate his birthday and honor his legacy in private.

Reverend Horton Heat maps spring tour with Cracker
Rockabilly revivalists Reverend Horton Heat will embark on a spring tour with Cracker beginning in May, after the band finishes up its own headlining dates over the next few months.

The group--led by singer/guitarist Jim Heath, also known as "The Reverend"--kicks off its slate Feb. 25 and 26 in New Orleans. Following a European outing in late March and early April, the band will return home to co-headline a month-long jaunt with Cracker starting May 13 in Kansas City, MO. Dates are at right. Overseas dates can be found at the trio's website.

"Laughin' and Cryin' with the Reverend Horton Heat," which surfaced in September on Yep Roc Records, is the band's first new album since 2004's "Revival."

"[The record is] kind of from a regular guy point of view," Heath said in a press release, noting that the new album veers more toward the "billy" in the "rockabilly" equation than previous efforts. "You know, I like to do stuff that's kind of tongue-in-cheek that makes fun of the good old boy thing as much as trying to glorify the country boy thing."

In 2006, the band--which also features longtime upright bassist Jimbo Wallace and drummer more recent addition Paul Simmons--issued "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Reverend Horton Heat," which features tracks from the trio's two releases on Interscope: 1996's "It's Martini Time" and 1998's "Space Heater."

Toby Keith reveals cities for 2010 tour
Country superstar Toby Keith plans to spend much of the year on the road, adding a list of intended concert stops to his currently sporadic itinerary.

Keith will take the stage later this month (2/18) for a performance at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, followed nearly a month later (3/12) by a gig at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. A handful of additional confirmed shows dot the schedule, including an April 25 concert at Indio, CA's Stagecoach Festival.

Earlier this week, the country star posted an alphabetical list of 39 North American cities, which he plans to add to his tour schedule. No word yet on when dates will be announced. The full list, as well as Keith's confirmed shows, are listed below.

The Oklahoma native continues to support last year's "American Ride," which surfaced in October and marked the performer's 13th studio release. The effort's title track--the only song on the album that Keith did not write--served as its lead single, landing the musician his 19th No. 1 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.

In October, Keith received the Songwriter/Artist of the Decade Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

"If I am ever in a position to be in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it won't mean any more than this," Keith explained in ainterview with LiveDaily last fall. "Any award given to me by songwriters is the ultimate. I'm completely at a loss for words to tell you how big it is to me." Keith has several awards under his belt, including two American Music Awards for Favorite Country Male Artist (2003 and 2005) and two Academy of Country Music Awards for Entertainer of the Year (2002 and 2003), among others.

The Apples in Stereo plot 'Space' journey for spring
Indie-rockers The Apples in Stereo return to the road this spring just in time for the release of their latest studio album, "Travellers in Space and Time."

The trek gets underway April 16 in Lexington, KY, and runs through a May 4 show in St. Louis, MO. The 14-city outing also includes dates in New York City (4/21) and Chicago (4/30). Details are included at right.

"Travellers in Space and Time," the band's seventh studio album, is due in stores April 20 on three labels: Elijah Wood's Simian Records, Yep Roc and the band's longtime Elephant 6 imprint.

"I wanted to make a futuristic pop record, to reach out to the kids of the future," bandleader Robert Schneider said in a press release. "It is what I imagine their more highly-evolved pop might sound like: shiny soul music with robots and humans singing together, yet informed by the music of our time. So we are sending a pop-music message through time, hoping they will decode it and be into it."

The new set, the band's first full-length studio effort since 2007's "New Magnetic Wonder," is also the group's first album to feature drummer John Dufilho, who replaced previous drummer Hilarie Sidney following the recording of "Wonder." The band also added keyboardist John Doss and vocalist/keyboardist John Ferguson as permanent members in the interim between releases.

Metric hits West Coast with 'Fantasies'
Canadian indie outfit Metric will spend a couple weeks this spring on the US tour trail, drumming up support for their latest studio effort, "Fantasies."

The rock quartet will climb aboard the tour bus for a March 17 show in Tempe, AZ, followed by a handful of West Coast club shows. The US jaunt concludes with a Jan. 27 gig in San Diego. The full schedule is shown at right.

"Fantasies," the group's fourth studio album, surfaced last April. The self-released set, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers charts and peaked at No. 76 on The Billboard 200, is Metric's first full-length collection of new material since 2005's "Live It Out." Metric recorded the album at Bear Creek Studios near Seattle with the help of producers Gavin Brown and Jimmy Shaw.

"The four of us went into the woods as a band and with no expectations and did whatever we wanted," vocalist Emily Haines stated at the band's website. "We were coming from London so it was a serious contrast--it felt like we had left civilization and all that mattered was music again."

"Fantasies" is currently streaming in its entirety on Metric's website; a free download of the lead single, "Help I'm Alive," and an acoustic version of "Gold Guns Girls" are also available.

Uncle Kracker celebrates 'Happy Hour' with roadwork
Detroit-based Uncle Kracker has plotted a spring course through the eastern portion of the US as he continues supporting last fall's "Happy Hour."

The DJ/singer/songwriter--born Matt Shafer--will focus on the Midwest and parts of the East Coast, beginning with a March 11 show in Flint, MI. The month-long outing will venture through clubs in 24 cities before concluding April 10 in Lynchburg, VA. Details are included below.

"I co-produced my last couple of records, so it was nice to write something and take it to a producer and let him bring out what worked," Uncle Kracker states at his website. "Sometimes you can be too attached to a song to be open-minded about taking suggestions from anybody."

The video for the album's lead single, "Smile," is currently streaming at his official website.

Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings change places
Folkie unveils new tunes in guitarist's revue

Gillian Welch and her guitarist Dave Rawlings swap roles on the current Dave Rawlings Machine tour that features three members of the Old Crow Medicine Show. In the midst of originals and numbers from the pens of Woody Guthrie, Neil Young and Bill Monroe, Welch is using the opportunity to perform a song or two from her upcoming album. Welch has not released an album in seven years.

Rawlings and Welch draw inspiration from the folk music and blues that inspired Bob Dylan and his generation of folkies. Their originals are more rough-and-tumble than the revivalists of the 1960s and a rambunctious spirit fills their versions of "This Land is Your Land," "See See Rider" and a few blues numbers that do not appear on Rawlings' debut album, "A Friend of a Friend."

The tour, which included stops in Los Angeles at Amoeba Records and the Troubadour on Thursday (2/4), continues though Feb. 16 up the West Coast and includes stops at Amoeba Records in San Francisco and Music Millennium in Portland, OR. Rawlings and Welch intend to keep independent record stores on their tours as a thank you for their support on their previous releases.

Jet takes off behind 'Shaka Rock'
Australian rockers Jet have outlined a spring trek of North America as the group continues canvassing the world behind last summer's "Shaka Rock."

Beginning with the tour kick-off March 5 in Toronto, the rock quartet will hit a handful of East Coast clubs before working their way westward. The 13-city run wraps up March 30 in Colorado Springs, CO. The full schedule is shown at right.

The band--comprised of singer/guitarist Nic Cester, drummer Chris Cester, guitarist Cam Muncey and bassist Mark Wilson--unveiled "Shaka Rock," its third studio effort, last summer. The set peaked at No. 27 on The Billboard 200 and reached No. 5 on Australia's ARIA Albums chart.

"The one thing I really love about this band is its honesty," Nic Cester explained in a statement posted at the band's website. "For better or worse, every album is a real and accurate window into how we are reacting to our lives in that point in time, which is why every album is uniquely different, and I think 'Shaka Rock' is the most honest so far."

"Shaka Rock" follows the group's 2006 release, "Shine On," which the band worked on over much of 2005 and into 2006 during writing sessions in Barbados, Australia, Massachusetts and Los Angeles.

In 2004, Jet won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video for the hit "Are You Gonna Be My Girl."

Alicia Keys takes 'Freedom' a step further
Alicia Keys has added some new dates to her upcoming tour schedule since last check as the singer prepares to storm North America in support of her recent studio set, "The Element of Freedom."

The trek, which kicks off Feb. 28 in Montreal, will now make a March 14 stop in Norfolk, VA, and has set a new closing date for the run: an April 10 show in Oakland, CA. Dates for the 23-city jaunt are included below.

A European leg will follow the North American outing. Those dates can be found at Keys' official website.

The R&B/soul star dropped "The Element of Freedom" in December. The set, which Keys co-produced alongside a bevy of well-known hit-makers, follows 2007's triple-platinum "As I Am."

"The music is really strong, and the drums are really aggressive, but my voice is vulnerable and delicate," Keys told MTV News in October, adding that the new album expresses her way of "eliminating all of the boundaries and all the limitations, so that you can feel your freedom and express your freedom in every way you possibly can, and that's what I did with this album."

The set has spawned four singles, including the forthcoming "Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down," which officially ships Feb. 22. The song is an answer to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," which Keys originally guested on.

"The Element of Freedom" debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200, selling 417,000 copies during its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It was Keys' first album to not debut in Billboard's top spot.

The Hold Steady reveals spring tour dates
Alt-rockers The Hold Steady have lined up a two-week spring roadtrip through the US Northeast, the band's first outing since the departure of keyboardist Franz Nicolay.

The Brooklyn-based outfit kicks off the tour April 2 in Ardsley, NY, and ambles around the villages and cities of the region through an April 16 appearance in Harrisburg, PA. Dates for the 12-city trek are included at right.

The Hold Steady continues to support 2008's "Stay Positive," which reached No. 30 on The Billboard 200, marking the group's best chart performance to date. Produced by John Agnello (Son Volt, Dinosaur Jr.), the album follows 2006's "Boys and Girls in America."

Last month, Nicolay announced to fans that he had left The Hold Steady after five years in the band. "I told the band I'd be leaving in early September, played my last show with them in Minneapolis around Thanksgiving, and dotted the t's and crossed the i's this week," Nicolay wrote on his website.

"Franz is an extraordinary musician that brought a lot to our band and remains a good friend," the group responded in a statement. "We wish Franz the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions and good times along the way. It was truly a blast."
